Country Road | 1999
Surprisingly this idea was inspired by a contemporary Japanese artist (I forget his name) who did some very minimal landscapes of a road, a river, almost like the color field painters like Rothko. That influence, along with Regionalism of the 30’s inspired me to take this familiar theme of a country road. This particular one came from rural Michigan. I loved the Hopper-esque low light of morning or early evening raking across the dirt road... a slice of Americana.
